Coconut oil – antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, what can’t it do? But isn’t saturated fat bad for you? Not in its natural form it’s not! If you study people of tropical climates who have a high intake of coconut oil, it’s easy to see the amazing health benefits (and low heart disease rates despite the saturated fat).
Here are three ways to use your coconut oil.
Eat it! Eat fat to get skinny? Why yes, you can have your coconut oil and eat it too! Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that are utilized by your body to produce energy quickly instead of being stored as fat. Coconut oil has been shown to help reduce weight by increasing your metabolic rate.
There are many diseases coconut oil can help improve including: diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, digestive disorders, thyroid issues, Alzheimer’s, and even HIV! The list goes on and on, so here is a list of links for coconut research in various disorders: http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/Coconut%20Research-Coconut%20Research%20Center.pdf
What is the therapeutic dose? According to Dr. Fife, a leading expert on the nutritional benefits of coconut, you should eat 1-3 tablespoons a day – but any is better than none.
As an added bonus, coconut oil is great to cook with. It doesn’t break down into toxic chemicals at high heat like most other oils, so you can use it safely.
Spread it on your skin! Coconut oil is moisturizing, nourishing and can even soothe eczema and psoriasis. It has anti-microbial effects as well as anti-wrinkle effects. It aids in removing the dead outer layer of skin cells, leaving your skin smoother. Coconut oil also aids in preventing sun damage. It’s good for your hair as well and helps with dandruff. So feed your skin some coconut oil!
Swish it! It’s called oil pulling and works by pulling toxins out of your body. You simply swish with coconut oil for 20 minutes, then spit (probably not down your sink or you may risk clogging it). Never swallow since the oil is then filled with toxins. This can be done one to three times daily. Not only does this promote mouth health (by healing gums, improving bad breath and whitening teeth) but it also works for chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, allergies, and congestion (to name a few).
Maybe it’s time to stock up on coconut oil; there are plenty of uses for it!
